Hi Folks,

this photo shows the red Micropoecilia picta male I caught. We caught approximately 500 picta males, among them only this single red specimen. The others have a yellow coloration with much more prominent black spots. The water conditions were about 1000 µS, the water temperature 26-28°C, the water was turbid and the fish was caught a few kilometres outside Paramaribo, Suriname. However, you can find lots of picta within the Paramaribo city limits! I strongly recommend a little salt addition (maybe 5 g per l) to keep the species healthy.

Furtheron you see a male Micropoecilia bifurca, another small species (males fully adult with 2 cm length) found in the black waters of Suriname. This one was caught near the airport Zanderij.

And, last but not least, you see a morph of a male Micropoecilia parae. This species is very common in many waters of French Guiana (soft, acid). Among the males you already see the golden shining males like on the photo. It may be dominant males, but I’m not sure. It is rather easy to catch these males as they really look golden from above. But there may be only 1 among about 50-100 normal males.
